Love it or hate it, it’s consistent and it ups the ante. If the purest distillation of Ironman as a concept is “you have to live with the consequences,” then I guess Gears Tactics‘ spin means the bad guys win if the good guys die. Ironman is always super risky, but Gears Tactics adds a wrinkle that can spell ultimate defeat because of just a few unfortunate missteps. Even more brutal, there’s no option to cut bait and evac the hell out of there there are story objectives to fulfill and that means every mission has to be seen through. However, it’s worth mentioning that Gears Tactics requires you send certain heroes on each mission. The tactical combat is violent and satisfying, the story is solid, and the presentation is excellent. Also, Cole Train, as always, is a goddamn delight.

If the lack of extras and multiplayer isn’t a big issue, Gears Tactics is great fun. Gears Tactics is a fantastic strategy game and an excellent addition to the Gears of War series, and I’d recommend it to anyone who is either a fan of Gears of War, or to the XCOM series style of game. Let them soak up the bullets and keep the main characters far away from the fray. Terrific transition of familiar Gears gameplay to a new genre. Why should these other guys get the credit when the COGs I know could be filling their XP bars? It’ll be the inverse in Ironman. Think of it as an assist mode for puzzles. It features both puzzle captions, designed to inform players of contextual information and its location, as well as unique “helpers” for each puzzle type. Immortals included helpful features seen in past Ubisoft games, such as customizable subtitles, multiple difficulty levels, and menu narration, but what makes Immortals stand out in 2020 is the attention to puzzle accessibility. Immortals Fenyx RisingWell known for its commitment to accessibility, Ubisoft had yet another success with Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Indoor/Outdoor combat: Right now the maps had either outdoor combat (which is the majority of the game), or indoor combat in some handful of story missions. Because of how same the maps are designed, most battles played out the same way. The results were an addictively fun action arcade game that earned rave reviews from disabled players. For Gears Tactics 2, the map variety needs to go way up and also maps need to be different and more organic. It isn’t nearly as feature-rich as the main series titles. Through #HyperDotA11y, a research campaign, the team worked with disabled players to ensure HyperDot launched with as few barriers as possible. Gears Tactics is my favorite Gears game in years. Gears Tactics is a solid turn-based strategy game that has something for genre veterans and newcomers alike.
